At a loss for a place to take the kittens, one of my co-workers suggested I set up at the local Wal-Mart. I know it sounds bad, but it worked out well. I’m a very good judge of character and picky about people in general. In all it took me about 6 hours to give 3 of them them away, (I left Chester at home because I could not bear to take him, and my girlfriend was in tears at the thought.)In short, many looked and “awwwed” at the little kitties. They were very calm and stoic during the ride and their time in the cat carrier outside the store.Bob the silver tabby was the first to go, he went with a very nice couple around my age (50).Next up went the Calico/grey tiger Electric Shoe, she was adopted by a very sweet college girl who very well off and has promised to make her a spoiled Princess (she kinda already was!) She will living in her apartment while she goes to school.Lastly was the little ginger Bear, I had promised him to one of the store employees, but before she could get off work a very nice Russian family fell in love with Bear, proclaiming him to be an exact dupli-cat of their beloved “Charlie” who had passed a month ago at age 17. I had thought they had left like other had, knowing they could not take him. They returned a half hour later and took him after some lengthy discussion. They were returning to Brooklyn so I gave them the carrier as a gift. They were driving a brand new Lincoln, (we get a lot of Russians along with Orthodox and Hassidic Jews up here in the summer, The Russians usually favor Mercedes.)Their children were well behaved and very exited and happy to have found a suitable replacement for Charlie.I was exhausted and went home to eat and take a nap.I gave the adopters my phone number and told them if there were any question or changed their minds I would take them back. That just leaves Chester, I want to keep him but one of the people who wanted Bear but didn’t may be given Chester if she calls or if Barbara’s nurse calls for him.I hope and pray my little kitties all have nice forever homes and loving families.I took a chance, yes there is some risk here, but I feel I made the right choices.I know many pets get adopted from shelters by people who are not suitable for cat ownership or can be cruel by abandoning them or retuning them to the shelter or worse. Our Rag Doll/ Siamese mix “Poodle” was a shelter rescue from Desstin shelter in PA. I was assured she was checked out for parasites and disease, but still she came home with ear mites and Coccidia which cost another $200 to treat and made her Vet very upset to have been released to me in that condition.I was shocked as well, having been lied to by the “nice” people who ran the shelter. You never really know sometimes.
Dream4U- this is what we go thru every weekend at PetCo. Susan has become a very good judge of people. She really screens them like you did – with the caveat that if they change their minds for any reason, kitty comes back to us.
Regarding Chester and mama kitty – I really would like to talk to you via email.
One of the biggest reasons people dump their pets is for spraying , marking and other secondary sexual behaviors cats love to do when they are not spayed or neutered. Also roaming and fighting yowling and going into heat etc. So fix your pets is the only way to go here-it is not just too many kittens but having better pets.
Rikkie Tavi is so right! That kitty that the horrible woman wanted put down is just fine. We found out she has 12 other cats and my guess is she doesn’t clean the littler boxes very often. That will make a cat pee outside of the box. This kitty is very sweet. Maybe someone will see her at PetCo this week and adopt her. I asked Susan about bringing her here now that we are back form vacation but she said Kitty is actually doing great at PetCo. We went to see her yesterday and she really is doing great. So, I’m probably going to bring home a pregnant kitty from the shelter and keep everyone for about 10 weeks when it will be time for spaying and adoptions.
I did email you, I will try again. Poodle and Roy Batty seemed a bit relieved to have the kittens gone. Mama Taffy and her oldest son Seal seemed a bit sad as did Chester. But as of this morning they all seem fine and Chester is reveling in all the extra attention and food from Mommy and us. We even played fetch while i was making Breakfast.
Years ago we had a big super sweet male named Freckles. I thought it was cool not having him neutered. One day when he was about 8 months old, I was cutting out a pattern on the floor and he came over, backed around and sprayed me! He was at the vet that afternoon, and I never had an un-neutered cat again. He lived til 17 and the kids used to dress him in doll clothes.Last year my cousin and I captured a mama and 5 kitties and took them to Portland Oregon’s spay and neuter clinic. (free) 2 of the kitties live with her and mama comes every day to eat.
Cats playing fetch are great. My vet told me to neuter my male kitten at about 7-8 months, as once they start spraying, it becomes a habits. Freckles was caught in time.

All this stress and work and expense because too many ignorant people still won’t neuter their cats and dogs! Thank you for doing your very best!
