Except that if she was really from Iran she would never pronounce it “eye ran”.

It was probably the teacher who said she was from “Eye-ran.”

I remember a fellow student in college who gave his bio in those go around the room and introduce yourself sessions as “Mah na-yum is Tah-kee-oh-she Ah-bay, frum Koh-bee Jah-pa-yun”. He thickened it a bit for that purpose, but really did have an east Texas accent. He had spent the summer before school with friends in Lufkin, TX, practicing his English.

When I was in high school there was a girl from Iran. Her family fled when the Shah was deposed. This was in ’78 or ’79 when the hostage crisis was going on.She used to get a bunch of crap from the bullies. She never called her homeland Iran. She always said she was from Persia.

Night-Gaunt49I had what I considered a Texas Urban accent – not quite Carlin’s “Hi, I’m from nowhere” but not too noticeable outside of Canada. I auditioned at WRR and they said, “You have a pecular accent. Where are you from?” “I was born and raised in Dallas, where are you from?” They wouldn’t answer and I didn’t get the job despite my knowledge of classical music.
