Despite the constant references to death as slumber, sleep, dirt nap etc. It is only death. Though for the longest time people believed that even if you die, you may still get up and walk around for terrible reasons like feedin on the life’s blood or life force or both of your beloved family. Some probably still fear the “restless dead”.
Kudos to Ellen here. It would be easy to ignore it since everyone HAS to know that she’s not really dead. I assumed that all the adult patrons were just playing along with the joke and the kids figured it out when she avoided getting kissed. However, instead of ignoring it as no big deal since the likelihood of anyone actually be deceived is slim, Ellen is using this as an opportunity to teach Ruthie about integrity. Way to go, mom!
