I always mangled the phrase badly when playing that game. It could be only a word or two different from the starting phrase when it got to me, but after me the only word that would still be right was “the” or “a”. I couldn’t retain a word to pass on accurately a second after I heard it.
I remember that in music vocal class. The teacher wanted to prove about gossip. She started with me and I tried to repeat to the next kids sitting by me, time got to the end to the last student amazed how close to what the teacher started.

I was always awed by how much the rumor changed from the first to the end.

I only played the game once, and I could only hear the sibilance of the whispering: “Wiss-a wiss-a wiss-a wiss-a”.
