I remember feeling the way Calvin does.

He Does get a little excited, doesn’t he?! I remember having the same feeling when school was called because of a snow storm. The town I lived had a factory that had a very loud whistle of sorts…anyway, when that whistle started blowing, we all wished for “6” as that would tell everyone there was no school!!! Oh, joy! ;)

Lucky kid. In my mother’s house Saturday was chore day for the kids. She’d take the car and go grocery shopping, and leave us to clean house etc. while she was gone most of the morning. After age 11 I was expected to prepare lunch, too. We used to tell each other they had kids to do the work; that’s the way it felt.

We got to watch cartoons to keep us quiet and out of the way; otherwise, we were booted out until noon.

I set an alarm. Yes I had an alarm when I was 6, and every Friday, I would set it to 6:50am so i could get up in time to watch “The Looney Tunes Show”. This was way back before the PC & child psychology crowd ruined cartoons with “Politically Correct” images & sounds, along with most of the “violence”, guns, axes, knives, etc..
After Bugs Bunny and friends were done, there was Ton & Jerry on another channel to watch …. and I’m old enough to remember “Old Mammy Two-Slippers” as one of the main characters – even if she wasn’t actually named in the cartoon(I learned the name years later). If you do manage to see one of the old Tom & Jerry cartoons on T.V. now, odds are pretty good you will not see any with “Mammy” in them, due to the PC crowd complaining about it.On the other hand, during any other day of the week, my alarm may or may not have been set for the time my parents thought I should be up. In fact, my mother learned to sneak in and reset my alarm after I fell asleep by the time I hit 7. I promptly started ‘hiding’ the alarm in different places around the room. This little ‘war’ continued until I was about 9, I think.

Sometimes I sleep better there, too – and I don’t have a Calvin to keep me awake.

TV didn’t exist until I was in HS. My family purchased their first TV when I started college the summer of 1954. My little brother watched Winkie Dink.

Enjoy it while you can, kid. (I remember getting up so early I caught the sign-ons of the TV stations…)

Before the cartoons, but after the sign-ons ;-), there were things like Sunrise Semester. I remember catching the last 10 or 15 minutes of all kinds of strange adult-education movies, like “Progress in Hydroponic Farming” (which made LOTS of sense to a New York City 6th floor apartment dweller). Strangest thing: In high school, one day when we had a substitute for gym and couldn’t do any activities, the teacher fired up the film projector (remember those?) and started a show about growing tomatoes in greenhouses… without soil . . . OMFG it was the SAME MOVIE from the 1950s more than ten years later!!!!!

Evil Rat, there are plenty of violent and double-entendred cartoons on TV today, if you have cable. As far as the PC crowd you disparage for removing Old Mammy Two Slippers, I’m glad to see it. Most of us have moved beyond that kind of racial stereotyping.

How can parents be surprised that a 6-year-old would wake up at 6 a.m. after making him go to bed at 8:30 p.m. the night before? One Saturday morning as a kid I remember turning on the TV and seeing, instead of Bugs Bunny, Apollo 15 on the moon.

@jkl555
Now, one of the great pleasures of Saturday mornings is to wake up and lie in bed, knowing you don’t have to rush off to anywhere.

Oh Calvin early in the mornings its suppose to be quiet. Read a book or something.

If you turned the TV on too early you got the test pattern and that loud DOOOO … In the early days, they sometimes reached so far back in the movie short libraries that some of them were silents. No cheesy piano, just silence.

Does anyone remember Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye? My used to talk about him and I can very, very vaguely remember seeing something on TV…
spacemanspiff007 over 10 years ago
Sammy Kaye (March 13, 1910 – June 2, 1987), born Samuel Zarnocay, Jr., was an American bandleader and songwriter, whose tag line, “Swing and sway with Sammy Kaye”, became one of the most famous of the Big Band Era.

I stopped liking many cartoons when I was about eight years old. I still liked Bugs and the Looney Tunes gang and Disney cartoons, but I hated Scooby Doo and toons like that. To this day, that stupid noise they make when they’re running in the air gets on my nerves. When my son was little I enjoyed watching X Men and Batman and cool toons like that with him. I also fell in love with SpongeBob; that and Popeye are the best cartoons ever, in my opinion. I like those two the best because they are really laugh out loud funny.

How I miss this… being able to wake up NOT TIRED at 6AM and rush to the tv to watch cartoons. And without an alarm.
