Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for September 11, 2014
Transcript:
Pig: Hey, Steph. What's up? Pastis: Did you know that Des Moines is the most populous city in Iowa? And that it has its own symphony and the Des Moines art center and the Pappajohn sculpture park and a capitol building with five domes and is a great place to live and work? Rat: Let me guess. You're kissing but because 'Pearls' just began running in the Des Moines register. Pastis: You're very cynical. Pig: it's not heaven, it's Iowa!

Enjoy the little extra money while you can, Stephen. The newspaper as a medium through which one can earn a living is dying. Their ad revenues, including that garnered through on-line editions, is now as low as it was in 1960.https://i.imgur.com/A6hfP.png

Let’s see, Des Moines rhymes with de coins, de loins, rejoins, and dezoins (related to zounds)…….surely there’s good material to work with here. Go for it Stephan (WTF way is that to spell Steven anyway?)

You hear that Beloit, WI? Maybe you should have this strip in your city and see what nice things he’ll say about you!
Sisyphos about 10 years ago

“Stephan”, with an A, is NOT pronounced “Steven!”
It’s pronounced “Stef’-fen,” and it’s used in various countries, including Germany. In some places it’s spelled Stefan, and often pronounced Ste-’fan.
In the case of this cartoonist, “Stephan” and “Pastis” are both Greek names, cos he’s of Greek descent.
You’re confusing it with “Stephen,” which is English, and IS pronounced like “Steven.”

Des Moines is also miles away from DC, Chicago, LA and many other “centers of culture” in the United States, which increases its attractiveness exponentially.

Hey, we’ve had you over here on the East side of the state for years and you never say anything good about us! But, when the Governor is involved, then it all changes…just like with police chases.

I can hear ‘em callin’ hogs in the clear Ioway air, I can sniff the fragrant whiff of an Ioway rose!

@Susan Sunshine—Steph probably doesn’t care how his name is pronounced, as long as it’s spelled right on his paycheck!

Anyone know what strip the Register dropped so PB4S could be added?

every time, I see Pig, scream or get excited, I just picture him, having Steve Smith’s voice, from American Dad

Hmmm, Iowa, nice people, but nuttin; to write home about!Of course, let’s not forget Walter ( Radar) O’Reilly
Fido (aka Felix Rex) about 10 years ago
All this talk about Iowa and nobody remembers Cpl. Walter O’Reilly of Ottumwa. Heck, even his good buddy Capt. Benjamin Franklin Pierce (of Crabapple Cove, ME) got a mention.

Never been to Des Moines, but Dubuque was cool when we visited last year to see a production of my wife’s play, “Like Music”.

Oh come on Steph … how can Rat possibly not comment on the Mother Iowa statue across from the Capitol Building?
haggerty3 about 10 years ago
If you don’t have anything nice to say about Iowa, say nothing at all. I have nothing to say about Iowa. Oh, on second thought. “It’s not Missouri.”

Ok, you low-state types, the highest point in Florida is Britton Hill in the Panhandle at 345 feet. Florida has the lowest high point among the 50 states. Delaware, however, has the lowest mean elevation. Long before the seas get done with their rising, Good-bye, cruel world!

Old Dubuque, old Dubuque on the Mississippi river. How I love you with my heart, how I love you with my liver.

Wouldn’t he tease Des Moines in earlier strips just because Pearls wasn’t in its newspaper?
