Kids have been arrested for writing on desks. Quite a journey from my childhood, there was barely room for my doodling on the soft, pine desks we had. You didn’t even need a pocketknife, which all the boys had and many of the girls. A pencil or pen would produce a fine engraving.

^Yeah, but adults started yelling at the schools about all the degenerates, so it is zero tolerance for a lot of things. And if a kid gets out of hand even a little, all the folks outside of the schools will scream at the teachers for not controlling them. Heck, when I was a kid, we didn’t worry about fights until weapons were pulled – but that was 30 years ago.

Joe, Zack is indeed Left-handed. That was intentional - just seemed to fit, and John Newcombe and I may do a storyline on that sometime. If anyone has suggestions relating to everyday problems that Southpaws encounter, please post a comment!

Re: The “Zero Tolerance” storyline, the chief complaint seems to center around the implied lack of dealing with students on an individual basis. That is a recipe for overkill ( and stories that wind up in the national media that make school officials seem clueless.)

bueller-love the strip. Lefties encounter less and less intolerance these days. However musical instruments, particulary brass with valves and stringed instruments, are quite challenging for lefties. Remember Paul Mc cartney and his left handed guitars and Hendrix with the right handed guitars reversed. As a trumpet player, I learned to deal with it. Later, in the USMC, I became Platoon high-shooter in boot camp with a right handed weapon. What makes it “right” is the shell ejector and the safetey switch.

As for today’s strip I totally agree. A kid cannot even take an inhaler for asthma emergencies without more paperwork than a mortgage. And don’t get a headache.

It wouldn’t be so funny if it hadn’t actually happened. Real life has caught up with the funny papers and passed them in lunacy.

We should have a zero policy on teachers. Scum who seduce students or break the rules in any way ought to be taken out and immediately shot on the playground. It’s only fair.

Hear, hear! My step-brother teaches shop in Arkansas, and his school has banned smoking….for the staff. He would have to bum his last cigarette from one of the students, who still have a smoking area.

Joe, the “Genius” designation, far as I can tell, simply makes it possible to navigate the site’s archives, right?

As far as getting a free account, that may be the case. I don’t know - I hadn’t asked and an arrangement like that hasn’t been offered.

By now we’ve all see plenty of examples in the news of “Zero Tolerance” stupidity in schools. What they all have in common is a steadfast refusal by teachers and administrators to be willing to think or judge.

And these are the people the public turns their children over to. No wonder home-schooling grew so huge, and not just among the people who think Adam and Eve rode around on dinosaurs.
