This is the first time I remember it being clearly stated that Nelson and Sylvia live somewhere else. So I looked it up on Wikipedia and was astounded to see that Sylvia is married to Dan, a wildlife photographer. Now that I know that, I think we’ve seen him, but I sure wouldn’t remember they were married. Guess it isn’t relevant to the storyline…
I also thought Nelson lived there. And no, I didn’t babysit for my grandkids, nor does my daughter sit for her grandchild. “I raised you; you raise yours.”
I gave up a job for my first one I could not afford the travel distance from daycare to job very low income. My parent’s/grandparents retired had their own lives, I would not saddle their grandchildren on them everyday.
I’d be glad to have my grandkids close enough to eat with us. 2000 miles away is too far except for a once or twice a year meal with them. Even 100 miles is too far away
Dan and Sylvia got married and bought the house next door. Re birds: if a nest full of peregrine falcon chicks (eyases) or even eggs loses its parent birds, unrelated peregrines will step in and raise them.
I volunteered to baby-sit grandkids free after I retired. I love being part of their lives every day and my kids love that their children are being raised by someone with the same values that they use themselves.

A think a grandchild completes a circle of life. Well without the final curtain call.

If not for Grandparents, a lot of kids wouldn’t be getting fed at all.

Grandparent birds don’t sit around on the couch or their favorite chairs all day either.

Sparrows around here feed any Sparrow that even acts like a baby if it can keep up with the crowd.

What’s the matter, Earl? Feeling a little cheep today?

Except maybe cardinals. They will feed anything with its mouth open. I have seen videos of them feeding koi, and a crying infant.

How can you tell who’s who in the bird world, Earl? Maybe the grandparent birds help out when they need to :~D

Most grandparents would be thrilled to have their grandchildren around all the time.
