That uncomfortable moment when your best friend thinks you’re some sort of bigot.

Marigold, chickens can fly, at least ones that haven’t been caged their whole life. And having lived on Kauai, where there are feral chickens everywhere, the answer to why the chicken crossed the road is easy: To get away from the rooster.

Why did the chicken cross the Mobius Strip? To get to the other, uh, never mind.

And that episode of “WKRP” aside, so can turkeys. The local wild ones roost in trees.

I had a couple of my chickens give me a fright yesterday when they came flying straight at me. I thought I was under attack by strange wild birds before I realized it was just my own poultry. While some of my chickens are completely earthbound, others have no difficulty flying up into our trees to roost at night or clearing great distances on the wing when they want to get someplace in a hurry.
