She thought he went home when she said her husband was out…but he’s actually been lying in wait by their driveway… well, sitting in wait, in one of their lawn chairs…. for an hour and a half, hoping to spot a new ladder in the van.
And there it is… a beauty, too. Shiny, extra big…. just the ladder he was hoping for.
But…. but…. “no”? How can he be saying “no”?

It’s perched perilously close to Burl’s head…..maybe it’s not tied down that well, and it’ll….y’know…sorta slide offa the roof and crown Burl one, and that guy’ll say: “Funny you should ask!! THERE it is right now!!!….”but, hey, you look a little out of it at the moment, you should’nt really be up on a ladder in your present condtion, and…..“….?!!!!……….”Heeeeeey, you big cement-head!!! My ladder broke when it hit your big rock skull!! !%!%$##@#!!"
I would tell him I rented the ladder but the home center has others he could rent . “But I have to return this one as soon as I’m finished with it. BTW, Burl, who you gonna try to talk into painting your house for you?”
