We had the milkman come to our house twice a week. Now my wife picks up milk, eggs, and home made butter from a farm a couple miles from home. And yes, the milk still has the cream on top! Another nice thing is that it’s on an Honor System….walk into the shed, open the fridge, get what you need, and leave the money. Country living.
I remember the milkman and the baker coming every day. The milkman was a friend of my father’s and the baker was the father of two of my teachers in Grade 8.
Ohhh, we are showing our age! My Mother stopped home delivery, when it got “too expensive” & sent me to the local “liquor” store for milk, bread, any small needs…the liquor was behind the counter, one shelving unit, all hard, no beer. He made all his money from people buying “ooops, ran out of this or that” than liquor!!!
I remember home delivery of milk when I was little, then as an adult my ex and I bought an older house that had a milk door on the outside by the back door of the house with a little cubby hole for the milk bottles. Definitely showing my age here :-)
If we are playing “I am older than you”, I remember when the milk man had a horse who would keep up with him as he worked his way down the block. When it became mechanized, there was a Jimmy Durante movie in which he altered his truck to do the same.
neverenoughgold: I remember ice boxes; a lot of old timers still call a fridge that. We never had one, but I knew neighbors who did. The kids liked to put a caramel on top of the ice and see how far down it could go into the ice before the latter was replaced. The special ice door in back wasn’t used in because if not closed carefully, the outdoor heat would melt the ice too quickly and dust and insects could get in. There was a depression and a dust bowl at the time and money was short.

I had a grand-uncle who was a milkman for Borden’s. He and his milk truck were some of my earliest memories.
