Peace Turtle and Karma a re right. Newspapers have been very foolish in miniaturizing one of their prime attractions. And whoâs losing circulation by the gobs?
@NabuâŚSince when have social âwarsâ like illiteracy, drugs and obesity ever been lost. Only the physical wars like the battles with terrorism and third world countries can be defined as won or lost. As long as people think social issues can be wrong the struggle will continue.
Read your Orwell folks. The omni-present war against an undefined threat or enemy. We never win these stupid âwarsâ because you canât fight ideas. And we never win either, for the same reason. Therefore we are in a perpetual state of crisis. Itâs good for business and good for elections. 1984.
War on poverty. War on drugs. War on crime. War on illiteracy. Moral Equivalent Of War (MEOW) on our addiction to oil. War on taxes. War on spending. Class war. War on terror.
When your only tool is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. When your only tool is a war, everything looks like an enemy.
Oddly enough, the one place we donât use the term âwarâ anymore is in the Department charged with fighting them; sometime after we won WWII the âWar Departmentâ changed its name to âDefense [sic] Department.â And even more oddly, we havenât actually won a real war since then.

@prrdhJust as a side issue how much a calvary charges falls under the bean counters responsibilities and there would be considered a budget war.

The Man He Killedby Thomas Hardy
Had he and I but met By some old ancient inn,We should have set us down to wet Right many a nipperkin!
But ranged as infantry,And staring face to face,I shot at him as he at me, And killed him in his place.
I shot him dead becauseâBecause he was my foe,Just so: my foe of course he was; Thatâs clear enough; although
He thought heâd âlist, perhaps,Off-hand likeâjust as IâWas out of workâhad sold his trapsâ No other reason why.
Yes; quaint and curious war is!You shoot a fellow downYouâd treat, if met where any bar is, Or help to half a crown.
