Then McCay explodes on the scene with such outstanding stories and beautiful Art that takes one on a completely different ride. Even today many people don’t know how to react to it. What I find most amazing in this page is the dark shadows in the bottom panel, where all the colors are shaded and muted except for the flash of light of the fairies’ wand. Just stunning.
Huh. I wonder if this is related (derived from) Kipling’s poem (from 1895) about Policeman Day sending you back from the City of Sleep… Ah, it’s called The City of Sleep. Or maybe they just both drew on the same image.
