::softly:: If I were ever able to see my horses again, that’s exactly how I would feel and greet them.

Timber’s Guide: How to Hug Your Horse:1. Wrap both arms around his magnificent neck and place his head on your shoulder. If you are short and your horse is tall you may need to stand on a mounting block.2. Bury your fingers in his silky mane and press your cheek against his satin hide.3. Use your fingers to vigorously massage his neck at the root of his mane. There is no need to be to gentle here, the harder you rub, the better he will like it.4. Squeeze him tightly and hold until your arms ache. Some horses may return your hug by squeezing your shoulder between his head and neck.

Dana, one of the things I am going to include in my prayer of Thanksgiving, is that Marigold is back and that there is such a lovely strip as this to look forward to daily. THANK YOU!

Years ago my husband and I went riding while on vacation. It was late fall and we and the guide had the place to ourselves. I had a mare and I talked to her and sang quietly to her; rubbed her neck, sat as lightly in the saddle as I could. For an hour-and-a-half we walked and ran through woods and fields. When we got back there was a barrel of small apples at the dismount rail, a treat for the horses. I got an apple and as I walked over to offer it to her she looked me full in the eye as she took the apple. I stood by watching her enjoy it. Then, she reached out her chin and wrapped her head around my neck for a minute before letting go. I was very surprised, but my husband, who grew up around horses, laughed and said I’d made a friend. She’s still in my mind more than ten years later, that little mare.
