The funny thing about the Hallelujah Chorus? In Handel’s Messiah it’s the Easter song, not a Christmas one. Yet, every year it’s done as a Christmas piece.

I slipped right by the “George” and “Frideric” references, totally clueless, but caught it on the “Han…” reference. And that was because an old “Peanuts” comic has Charlie Brown making a “Handel” joke to Schroeder — a comic that I haven’t seen in decades.

The Messiah as a whole contains parts about Christmas, but Hallelujah isn’t one of those parts.

Mallett would probably appreciate that I call my bike Tchaikovsky, because of the nutcracker seat.

To all: Christmas is about the birth of Christ. Just as his passion is referred to in many carols, the Hallelujah Chorus implies the necessity of his birth in order to fulfill God’s purpose in his death and resurrection, and ultimately attain his victory. The promise of the angel that Jesus would “save his people from their sins” was fulfilled in the birth, life, death, and resurrection. They are inseparable. Also, the mood of joy and triumph is appropriate to the celebration of Christ’s birth. In addition, I often hear other selections from the oratorio at Christmas, including O Thou That Tellest Good Tidings To Zion and For Unto Us A Child Is Born. Hallelujah Chorus may be “more appropriate” for performance at Easter in some minds but remember, the song is about Christ’s ultimate victory and isn’t directly about his resurrection either. IMO, this debate over the Hallelujah Chorus is much ado about nothing.

Painful… so they just HAPPEN to have a Lake George and a “Frideric” Street in Frazz’s town? Not likely.
