In English the plural of ā€˜virusā€™ is ā€˜virusesā€™: in Latin it is a mass noun and therefore doesnā€™t have a plural.

I like that hypothesis, very logical and very plausible. I still believe the probability of earth life starting that way is lower than the the probability of life independently starting in multiple locations.

When we next meet it, it will be like us encountering Doomsday from Superman.

There is no such word as ā€œviriiā€ in English. It (or viri) may be used in computer geek language, but only to refer to ā€œcomputer virusesā€ and never to real viruses.

Mind you that this is the thought process of a man who once said he could destroy the Earth if he wanted to and offered proof.

ā€¦UF&C, this is English heā€™s talking, here ā€“ we make up new words all the timeā€¦if virii comes into popular use, it will become a recognized word, and can be used for just about anything the speaker wants to apply it toā€¦it is one of the great things about our languageā€¦

ā€œViriiā€ isnā€™t English. ā€œVirusesā€ is English. ā€œViriā€, ā€œviraā€, and ā€œviriiā€ are all fake Latin, roughly comparable to English ā€œsheepsā€, ā€œsheepenā€, and ā€œsheepsesā€. All it does is say to people, ā€œi is edjumacated, cuz i noes latinā€.

Actually, probes that land on other bodies potentially capable of supporting life are sterilized to the best of our technological ability. And Europa ā€“ so far ā€“ has been avoided entirely.
