Old time radio, such as Gunsmoke and Dragnet ran in the 1950s as well as their TV counterparts. So, Charlie Brown might be tuned into a radio show. I’m not sure what the last one to air was, but it was either Suspense or Johnny Dollar. Before my time, but fun to listen to online.
During the 60s, the local radio station in our small town would play “Fibber McGee and Molly” and a few other comedies during the dinner hour. My parents would turn on the radio and we’d listen as a family. I always wondered how the sound effects were done for the closet.
Old time radio was great. Listen to the wonderful Stan Freberg (RIP, Stan): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppZ57EeX6vENow, you can’t do THAT on television!
In the late 1950’s when I was little Mom and Dad had a Zenith clock radio..It had a orange light below the clock to illuminate it at night..I was fascinated by that radio..I can still hear the “Brillcreme” and “Pepsodent” commercials that came on at night.
Wildroot Cream Oil is sung to “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” And it was on Sam Spade. My Mom used to sing the Pepsi Cola one:Pepsi ColaHits the Spot10 full ounces that’s a lotTwice as much for a nickel, too.Pepsi Cola is the drink for you.(Not sure about the ounces, might have been five.)My sister who was born 14 years before me, remembered old time radio in the early fifties. Mom and Dad liked Ma Perkins.

Some commercials really are exciting the first few times you hear/see them. Most aren’t.

One of my favourite classic radio commercials:
You need some Wildroot Cream Oil, Charlie, to keep your hair in trim.
Put on some Wildroot Cream Oil, Charlie, it’s made with soothing lanolin.
Go get some Wildroot Cream Oil, Charlie, start using it today,
You’ll have difficulty, Charlie, keepin’ all the gals away!(Hiya, baldie!)
Get Wildroot Cream Oil today!!

I listened to Gangbusters, Fibber McGee and Molly, The Great Gildersleeve, and others into the ’50s.

Did radio shows originally had the commercials under contract with the show as sponsors, same for 1950’s-early 1960’s TV shows?
