I often wondered whether my parents knew the answer. Their answer was always look it up in the dictionary. But if I knew how to spell it I wouldn’t need the dictionary, but you need to know how to spell it to look it up.
Almost always one should have some idea of how the word is spelled – take “alliegience” … (yes, I left it misspelled) … starting with the “all” one gets to find “allegiance” … I did have a word I couldn’t find once … It was a word I hadn’t used or seen in years and was starting with the wrong letter. That said – I’m so glad for spellcheck and syn/ant as part of word processors.
