Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for February 26, 2015
Transcript:
Calvin: "Look at how people are porttrayed in comic strips. The women are indecisive whiners, nagging shrewds, and bimbos!" Calvin: "And the men are no better. They're befuddled morons, heavy drinkers, gluttons, and lazy goof-offs! Everyone is incompetent, unappreciated, and unsuccessful" Calvin: "What kind of insidious social programming IS this?! No wonder the world's such a mess! I demand politically correct, morally uplifting role models in the funnies!" Dad: "Yes, we all know how funny good role models are" Calvin: "And look, all the kids are obnoxious brats!"

How much has changed? Now kids are smarter than the adults(parents). The nets have tried to get away from the extreme examples of the stereotypes Calvin refers to.

One could say similar of the sitcom tropes. Dad’s in arrested adolescence, Mum is a control freak (she has to be) and the kids are scheming, selfish users.

Kids know very little today. They have learned the technology of their day, gradually. We learned the technology of our day and got an education too. No education—no knowledge.

Calvin sure changes his mind dramatically. Much of the time, he welcomes corruptive influences.

It is truly amazing how children are so frustrated with how stupid their parents are when the kids are growing up, and how amazed the kids are when they get older and discover how much their parents have learned..sigh…
