If it happened at McDonald’s, he would’ve asked the girl behind the counter to marry him.

That’s basically what happened to us. Been rolling along cozily for 10+ years, looked at each other around our birthdays last year and basically said “yeah, it’s time”

Some people aren’t worth wedding. Some are. Those who say they want their freedom or “it’s only a piece of paper” really mean, “It ain’t you, babe, no no no, it ain’t you babe, it ain’t you I’m lookin’ for, babe.”

Besides, freedom is highly over rated.

Don’t marry her. She looks old enough to be your mother.

you guys, i mean some of you, most bizarre comments. Hope it is just that online persona. This form of proposal is, to some of us, more appealing than conventional, trained expectation behavior. It was real and from the heart. No BS and open for discussion. Our was similar after cohabitation and breakup. If a person feels comfortable enough to not have to fear cracking eggshells, it is a good sign that there is more than fantasy. Don’t be so literal, kids. He meant her, not just anyone, and she knew that. Awkward and sincere is more appealing to some of us than intentional and self centered. Besides, we know the outcome. This is one guy she did not punch in the nose during the course of the strip.

The “Cathy” comic strip somewhat ripped off this idea with Cathy’s very feminist friend Andrea one day standing at the microwave, the buzzer goes off, and Andrea says “It’s time.” Meaning time to meet someone, marry and procreate, all of which she does in the span of a few months, driving Cathy completely crazy.

Serial monogamy can work, for me 8-1/2years, 10 “shopping”, followed by 30-1/2 (so far and counting, no signs of waning). Three or more, points to not learning from mistakes. See Sex at Dawn for the tribal version, which can also work, it’s just that our institutions frown on it. A stable grouping is required, I suspect.
