Barista: Can I help you?
Rat: Yes. Do all cafe workers have to have a nose ring, tattoos, and a look of total disinterest?
Barista: I'd get mad, but I don't care enough.
Rat: You know, there are colors other than black.
I donât use the word âbaristaâ; itâs too dignified a word for someone whose only job is overcharging people for coffee. In this guyâs case, even âcafe workerâ is too much, because it implies that he works.
The servers donât set the prices. And I expect, if you had to work long hours on your feet, with snarky to nasty customers and even worse bosses, you might not be the chipperest guy in the room.
Give servers a break. Theyâre probably working their way through school â or more likely, trying to pay off their college loans because they canât get a job in their field.
the answer to your first question rat IS âno!â- i was almost 60 at the time â no black shirts, mostly brown, blue, gray â no earrings, nose rings, or jewelry of any sort. no tattoos. ground our own coffee, tamped and pulled our own shots. steamed our own milk, all the while talking to the customer about âtheirâ day and served on an average 12 to 19 customers an hour, (not exaggerated) no time to even look bored. â so you shouldda stopped in at the place i worked youâd of found that there is always the exception :)the fun part was the âfollowersâ who loved the way i made their lattes cappuccinos etc.the not so fun part was the customer who would loudly yell âhey what is this, it tastes like âsâtââyou would âhave toâ offer an apology even when you found out that their complaint was â âsure doesnât taste like kwik trips!â and sugar cream it up so they got their sugar fix.i always wanted to say âhereâs your money back, PLEASE donât come back here again until you know what âcoffeeâ isâ-but of course i wasnât allowed.
Rat is a character â if he has a law degree, heâs never mentioned it. Some of the characters in the strip are rather stupid â Ratâs not stupid; but, heâs not bookish like Goat either.
Pastis, the cartoonist was a lawyer, as is his avatar in the PBS universe. If the Pastis character were speaking, then Iâd agree with you.
Seems as though Rat went to Cafe simply to pick a fight rather than for coffee in any of its various incarnations. If the cafe worker werenât so disinterested (maybe that is the correct word for his attitude), he might give Rat an accidental scalding-hot mini-showerâŠ.

Black is not a color, itâs the lack of it. Much like the barristaâs personality.

And donât forget to check for the BA in liberal arts, Rat. Thatâs standard among baristas, too.

None-the-less, I prefer this type of barista to the perky type.

Why do you ask, Rat?
Are you thinking about applying for a job there? You already have the look of disinterest.

I think Rat means âuninterestâ, a good judge displays disinterest in a case in which he/she is extremely interested.
