Thomas Jefferson was NOT in favor of handshakes, rather he preferred a polite nodding of the head – a formal bow – if you will, of the type popular at the time in England amongst the upper classes. Ladies would participate similarly. Watch a Masterpiece Theatre production of “Jane Eyre” or a similar period piece.
And this was all before the Centers For Disease Control were established.
My youngest son once did a whole conversation with another male driver using head nods. After he got done, he asked me I knew what they “talked” about. I told him no, as I don’t know headspeak. The other driver was in an antique car and my son “told” him he liked it. The driver “told” him thanks. I’m much more aware of this now, but I think only males nod. I’ve never seen a female say hi to me by nodding.

Easy mistake. His nose is as big as his fist.

I guess a hip bump would be out of the question!

Maybe he should move on to the head nod instead.

No more fist bumping for you, Earl. Some people might mistake that for assault.
