I grant that some of those who boost self-esteem do so in very ineffective, silly, dangerous and hurtful ways. They misunderstand what it is and are terrible at helping others (including themselves) find it. Mostly they subtract accountability from the human equation.
None-the-less, those with low self-esteem do a lot of unhealthy, dangerous and hurtful things to themselves and others.
Those with high self-esteem (real self-esteem) have the energy and vision to do much good in world.
Love yourself first, then you can love others.
This really means something! Misunderstanding what it means can do real damage.
Usually teachers are aware early in the school year when students are having problems. Then at the fall parent conferences they can give parents suggestions on how to help their children. It is now April and school is almost over, but James’ family has just now figured out that he has self esteem issues. They are about 6 months late.

All of these self-esteem boosters do seem to make people selfish.

His shellfish team?
(Freeholder: The “ernings” joke was cute, but the effect was undercut by “effect” instead of “affect”.)
(Susan and others: Google Toolbar includes a spelling checker for text boxes such as these. I’m sure you’ll be able to fing it.)
