“Reports circulated during and after the show’s run that the talking effect was achieved by crew members applying peanut butter to the horse’s gums. Alan Young said in later interviews that he invented the story. “Al Simon and Arthur Lubin, the producers, suggested we keep the method [of making the horse appear to talk] a secret because they thought kids would be disappointed if they found out the technical details of how it was done, so I made up the peanut butter story, and everyone bought it.” – wikipedia. Oh, and Ed was a gelding.

Nice to know that Marigold shares my (and my dog’s) love of peanut butter. Creamy is the ONLY way to go.

I always reward myself with some Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy ice cream (in moderation, of course.)

I just thought of this strip yesterday. Perhaps on some level, I remembered it coming in this order before.

I agree! Marigold deserves peanut butter! (And it would be funny to hear her talk with a mouthful of the stuff!)

Alan Young also said that the horse playing Ed learned very quickly what was expected of him when Alan was conversing with him. It wasn’t very long before there was no stimulus needed and he would wiggle his lips after being spoken to even when off camera. The horse’s name was Bamboo Harvester.

A horse is a horse of course, of course. And no one can talk to his horse of course. That is unless the horseIs the famous Mr. Ed.

Go right to the source and ask the horseHe’ll give you the answer that you’ll endorseHe’s always on a steady course.Talk to Mr. Ed.

People yakkity yak a streakAnd waste your time of day.But Mr. Ed will never speakUnless he has something to say.

A horse is a horse of course, of course. And this one will talk ’till his voice is hoarse. You never heard of a talking horse?

Well, listen to this:<p.I am Mr. Ed.

(and I only had to look up one line in the last stanza!!!)

My girl loves peanutbutter. Im not mean about it, like some people. When she starts the “talking” i give her a crispy dog treat. It helps her clean her palate.

“For which I ought to be rewarded with peanut butter.” After which you wouldn’t be able to speak so well….and ’round and ’round.
