Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for April 20, 2010
Transcript:
Chaplain: Thanks for coming by, Melissa. Melissa: Don't have time, ma'am. Have to be in OPS by 1300. Chaplain: Well, let's talk about that reassignment. I know it worries you... Melissa: What makes you think I'm worried, ma'am? Chaplain: I've seen your personnel file. And you have every reason to be alarmed by a superior taking an interest in you. Also, you're crying. Melissa: I am? Must be about my dog. Boy, I miss her.

Tell it to the Chaplain!

If Mel reads the forum sheāll never get over it.

is it fact that a chaplain can read a personnel file without service members prior consent? or is it just the case in cartoon land?
cdward almost 15 years ago
^Canāt speak for the military, but staff chaplains do have that right/responsibility in other setttings.

I love GBTās attention to detail. Combat patches and everything! Well, a few strips ago, I swear that one of the women had shoulder rank on, which looked like Air Force chevrons. Oopsā¦.

GT does to a good job in attention to detail. He tries to do a good job being accurate to fact as well; however he is not in the military and therefore doesnāt know what he doesnāt know.
I double checked with a couple of people who are paid to know. If a soldier is sexually assaulted, that information will not be in their personnel records. In fact it had better not or someone could find themselves on the wrong end of criminal charges!

Stop making me cry, Rick-o! Iām gonna miss NOW & Moyers very badly; especially since PBS doesnāt appear to be replacing them with anything comparable.
At least on the plus side, I donāt have to try staying conscious Friday nights past Gwennie Awful and her wimpy Wash Week poseur pundit posse.

As a veteran, and a chaplain currently with the American Legion, I see far too much of these types of things. They need to stop and no one, regardless of rank or position, should be above the law.

i applaud him covering this issue. iāve loved this strip since it began and he never ceases to amaze me.

Let it out, Mel. Itās no fun being the Queen of Denial.

^djinn & Dev: May be, may not be going to happen; but Melās freaking at the mere prospect, and the flashbacks could cause her as much harm, when she needs to be sharp ādownrangeā. There needs to be a good way to get the right authority the word, and get it stopped.
Take a group of young healthy people of both genders with working genitalia, mix with a stressful dangerous environment and uncertainty about the trustworthiness of the locals (so the historic ācamp-followersā of Gen. Hooker are not available to them - of either gender).
Of course they are going to be looking to each other, and the limited opportunities tend to make it a zero-sum game, with heavy competition and pressure for coercion.
Practical solutions? Anybody?

The obvious solution is to not go to war anymore. However, reality dictates that our so called civilization is not yet ready for peace.

Another question lurking in the bushes waiting to be answered.
Is FriscoLou alive?
FriscoLou almost 15 years ago
Is someone chopping onions?
Screw PBS, check the Globeās expose of the #1 outrage facing this forum, far more prevalent than command rape, affecting the lives of every poster here.

Why do people say Trudeau is so courageous for the subject matter he covers? He talks incessantly about Mark and Chase, but beyond Zonk, never addresses marijuana equality, He barely even acknowledges bi-polar politics other than Uncle Stupid Head, and after more than a year, still no avatar. Some issues are still too taboo. Some call it courage, other say Wishy Washy.
My suggestion to pbamrob is to add a 69 Tango MOS, āCombat Chaperonesā, elite MPs.

How come every time progs. have a heavy conversation theyāre holding a āseriousā cup of coffee?

Anyway, in my 20 years of service in the Navy (and I have no doubt that the other branches are any different), coffee is around no matter whether the talk is serious or not. For senior NCOs (which the chaplain isnāt, of course), itās practically a uniform item.

Iām simply curious about how heās going to handle this situation. After all, this is a comic strip. Iāll be going down range soon as a chaplain, so Iām intrigued at many levels.

Been there, done that myself.
Chrisnp almost 15 years ago
bradwilliams, thanks or actually double-checking. I didnāt think it would be in a personnel file, but Iāve been out of the military too long to be 100% certain of much of anything.
I also think GT does his best, and all things considered, his best is pretty good.
BTW, is anybody else annoyed by the chaplainās glasses, and donāt they look like they keep changing size?
FriscoLou almost 15 years ago
In the strips on the 16th-17th, the crucifix is large, garish, white and weaponized. Today itās diminutive and yellow. Whatās Trudeau trying to say?
W6BXQ, John almost 15 years ago
I think thecoast set a record for number of duplicate posts, one original and eight dupes!
Chrisnp almost 15 years ago
Trudeau was sayingā¦Hmmm, if I make the cross small and yellow, I wonder if anyone will notice.
