I caught an old episode of “Let’s Make a Deal” on the Game Show Network. The “Big Deal” of the day was a new Lincoln that cost $5,000.00!!! THAT was an old show!
i drew and built my house. i did it in 1986, remember the truck radio saying about the space shuttle tragedy while i was framing. its paid for, and not counting my labor it seems like it only cost around 40k back then. and the total electric house only cost about a hundred bucks a month back then. how can that be double now?
I remember when my father purchased a three bedroom brick house for $25,000 and commented on how much it cost him. That wouldn’t hardly purchase a bedroom now.
My parent’s house was $13,900 (1955). Their payments (which Mom said they could barely afford) were less than $100 per month. We sold it after Dad died for $350,000 (2009).
But the first thing you hear at the car dealership these days is “How much do you want your payment to be?” They don’t mention that by that criteria, you’ll be paying for seven years.
It was 1974, a sunny day in northern Texas, I moved into our first house with my wife. A new house it was and really smelled good and looked good. Only $6500.00. The truck crew set it up on cement blocks, leveled it, and that 12×60 mobile home was ours to enjoy.
My parents’ house was $12,000 brand new built for them in 1959. Brother had to pay me lil over $100,000 in 2001 for my share of the inheritance on the value of the house.

And, the annual taxes (divided by 12) on your paid-off house are significantly higher than your original house payments were

Bought my 1971 VW bus in 2000 for $1250. Recently turned down $3500 for it. Haven’t had car payments in over 40 years.

I paid $5000 for my first house — a newly constructed pre-fab three bedroom ranch on a slab.
