Back when 2X4’s were actually 2X4, right, Joe?

Runar, you just ruined “The Potato Eaters” for me.

2 x 4’s are in all walls, not just load bearing walls. Now for a long, detailed explanation of how house are built….

2 x 4 studs are in ALL the framed walls, Joe, not just the load-bearing ones.

Unless the outer walls use 2 x 6 staggered studs for better insulation, or the non-load-bearing walls use metal u-channels instead of wooden studs.

NE is not only short for northeast, but it’s also the abbreviation for Nebraska. I used to live in Nebraska. I was in the Air Force. I had to do clean up duty one time for a on base function. I drank 7 large glasses of water and lemonade. (not each, but some of both) Dehydration set in anyway. The next day, I had a fever and I just kept drinking water until I could finally go to the bathroom. Took almost 24 hours for that. Quite a scare.

What that had to do with studs is beyond me… ;)

Ah, Joe, they used to measure Actual 2X4 back when I was a kid, cut notwithstanding. Now they’re more like 1 3/4 (7/8) X 3 3/4 (7/8) and that isn’t the result of a blade width. Built new planting boxes not long ago i that was the variation.

Back in the mid 20th century some bright architect discovered that the smaller cuts would match up with plywood for easier measurements and layouts. It was the beginning of modular construction. A module being based on 48 inches.

    When I was a kid an undressed 2x4 was 2” x 4”. And a dressed (been though a plainer) 2x4 was about 1 7/8” x 3 7/8”.
