    They’ll be even less trustworthy after such treatment.

    That whole “trusted men” was always a delicate problem for medieval kings. If he treated his nobles too harshly, they’d rise up in revolt. If he treated them too gently, they’d figure he was weak, so they’d revolt and try to become king. If he raised commoners to high positions, they’d be loyal because they had no other choice, but the nobles would definitely revolt – and each one of them had a private army only a little weaker than the king’s.

    But what would happen if a king became paranoid and started seeing conspiracies everywhere? The nobles would have to protect themselves by conspiring to overthrow the king.
