It was a good answer, but I would have told him that you behave for the country/culture that you are in currently. It’s a better lesson.
We go out of our way to learn the customs of the countries we are visiting. Others should do the same for us. In this country, slurping is impolite and rude. (No, I do not mean myself – it’s the generic “we”.)
