I’m 30 and I at times catch myself saying “no problem” as the response to gratitude.

I’m way old school on this. When I was behind the register it was my courtesy to thank the customer for his/her business.

And yes, of course if they thanked me for waiting on them i was sure to respond with “You’re most welcome” or even better, "It was my pleasure.’

Plugger Poll – how about wearing hats – especially baseball caps – while eating in restaurants?

We can’t let these trends up set us. Like eating with your cap on… Enjoy the lunch.

No Problem is the New Thank You. I actually have No Problem with that. I’m 69 and consider myself a Plugger.

“No Problem” has been around as a response since at least the very early 1980s. It no longer bothers me, and I have occasionally said it myself…. typically when a “Thank You” was not really necessary for something I have done.

Yes. Languages change, and manners go downhill.

I was once so annoyed with a transaction that when I got the perfunctory “No problem”, I stopped dead in my tracks (no one was behind me) and said, “Problem? Was there a problem here?” in an incredulous tone. I scared the nincompoop so badly that he assured me everything was fine and probably didn’t use "no problem’ for a week. OK, an hour…

It’s the server who should say “thank you.” But if one automatically says thanks, the response of “no problem” is similar to “de nada” (it’s nothing) and just fine with me.

I’m 63 and I say No Problem. De nada is the same thing in another language, yet we translate it to You’re welcome just to make us feel good about it. I equate No Problem to My pleasure. I figure anyone, no matter their age, that gets upset about No Problem needs to get a life. There are more and worse things in this world than having our language change. I guess they would rather we all still used Latin.

nighthawks: I only had that response once – after thanking a kind volunteer bilingual helping me get census information in 2000. I am not sure I could have done it in French, which is my second language.

Yep, and ‘There you go’ is another poor response. Yep, I’m going and may not come back.
