Pastis puns are distinctive for being heavily forced and apparently unintentional on the characters’ parts.

He was at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox? Wow! So was Brian Williams!

I don’t think anyone believes that Pastis invented or owns the pun. We just believe he owns the really, really bad pun.

I asked a friend of mine, an inveterate punster, whether he punned while on dates. “Sure, I pun on dates,” he replied. “On prunes and figs, too.”
