Smurfette is just the token female. Had the series survived longer, there would have been other token characters introduced to maintain some pretension of social relevance.

While imprisoned by Gargamel, Smurfdude decided that he was really a female persona that had been mistakenly born into a male body. Since all the medical expenses for the change were picked up by Gargamel, he-she did indeed decide to experiment. What the heck… you only Smurf once.

UNICEF didn’t account for this when they bombed the Smurfs ten years ago.

Smurfette was one of THREE female smurfs the youngest was the red headded child who wore coveralls, then Smurfette then Nanny or Grandma smurf.

Why did the guys clothes come of when he died?
