It is our self-made paranoia that we gotta have that cell phone all the time for ‘emergencies’. I grew up on a farm and there was one – count ’em, ONE – phone on the farm and it was in the house. We made it OK without instant communication.
Mom is a paraplegic with dementia. Absolutely helpless. Absolutely able to panic or cause something that panics everyone else on no notice. So Dad and I absolutely avoid situations where we both have our phones off.You can also program it so only select numbers can get through in a do not disturb mode… her, Dad, and an aunt who would be having an emergency if she actually phoned…

When you have little ones still in diapers, you never want to turn your phone off or down. Need to know in case of emergencies.
