Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for August 01, 2015
July 31, 2015
August 02, 2015
Transcript:
Mom: "I want you to pick up your room today, ok?"
Calvin: "Do I get paid?"
Mom: "No"
Calvin: "If I don't get paid, how do I know it's important?!"
Mom: "You can trust a mother one that"
Mothers arenât paid for the most important things that they do.
Note that Calvin is so short that only his head shows above the bottom of the last panel. In the first panel, he is only 1/3 the height of his mother. If his mother is, say, 5 feet 6 inches tall, then Calvin is less than 2 feet tall â thatâs only 22 inches (56 centimeters for those of you in the rest of the worldâŠ..).The average height for a six-year-old is about 3 1/2 feet â thatâs 42 inches (107 centimeters). To view the following strip in the archive and help GoComics generate revenue, please click on the blue archive link below. I found that if I threatened to clean his room myself if he didnât it always got magically cleaned. âCourse, I had to do it once, but thatâs all it took.
When my boys were little I always gave them a reason (hold my hand in the parking lot so a car wonât smoosh you). Later, they just assumed there was a reason. Now, I just tell them and it gets done.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned (I donât read all the comments) but does anybody remember Calvinâs mum asking him to âPick up his roomâ and Calvin replies âWonât it be too heavy?â and he bursts out laughing. That strip was a classic!xxx

What a little mercenary. Or âŠâŠâŠâŠ whatâs that other word, you know âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ.. the one for people who do âthingsâ only for money?

Of course you get paid. You get to eat three meals a day. You have a bed to sleep in. You get an education. Thatâs your pay. Now get to work.

I think the Mom was referring to her âpay.â The works she does is very important.

Note that the lines on Momâs sleeves always stay horizontal, regardless of the angle of her arms.

HobbesThatâs because sheâs actually wearing a Chroma key shirt and the lines are composited in post-production. Duh!!

But Mom did ask Calvin if he was okay with âpicking upâ his room and Calvin simply responded to her question.

I think the point is that a mother doesnât get paid with money, but she has the most important job of all. Especially with Calvin for a son âș
