Goat: To what do you attribute your accomplishments in life? Rat: I guess that would have to be my hard work, drive and initiative. Goat: And to what do you attribute your failures? Rat: My genes. Goat: Don't you see a bit of disconnect there. Rat: I come from violent stock.

Guess Pastis was reading about Nature vs. Nurture when he came up with this one. Not entirely sure how the nuture fits in here, but the nature would be the gene pool Rat’s from. Ironic, we’ve mat some of Rat’s family before and they aren’t violent like he is.

Just once, why doesn’t Goat give Rat a nice, swift head butt?

… or you could praise God for your successes, and blame yourself for your failures. Seems to work for a lot of people.

If Rat had that boxing glove on in the first three panels, Goat should have known better than to ask a follow up question.

No, he’s right; when Goat was hit, his head jerked to the left and his ears stayed to the right. Now that his head has stopped, momentum pushed them to the left, past Goat. Notice that Goat’s head is away from the point of impact now. (Pedantic enough?)

Isn’t the most interesting thing about this that Rat is actually (implicitly) acknowledging that his violence is a failing?
