Gracie: Tia Carmen, are we related to Luis and Walter Alvarez? Tia Carmen: I don't think so. Who are they? Gracie: Luis and Walter were brilliant scientists who first suggested the impact theory, which says a giant asteroid caused the extinction of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Tia Carmen: Hmmmm... that's pretty smart. Tia Carmen: I think they're your third cousins twice removed on your mother's side! Gracie: Yay!

I once saw a TV documentary that claimed that one of the Alvarez’s had recanted the theory that their discovery of a layer of sediment rich in iridium at the “K-T” boundary proved there had been a planet-changing impact that caused mass extinctions, including the dinosaurs.
According to this show, the new thinking was that global climate cooling caused the extinction, including a long period of no plankton piling up in ocean sediments, which allowed the undiluted influx of iridium-rich micrometeorites to form the layer they had discovered.
This sounds plausible but for two things. First, I’ve never found any other source to confirm that one of the Alvarez’s changed his mind, which should have been big news. Second, this was before the discovery of what is supposed to be the remnants of the impact crater off the Yucatan peninsula. Meantime, the impact theory has become nearly an article of faith, which is never good for science.
My greatest source of scientific information for about 40 years has been Scientific American, but in recent years they have bought into the stupider conclusions of the zanies in charge of quantum mechanics (actual article cover title: “Are You a Hologram?” Uh, no.) AND they have become religious zealots on manmade global warming.

HECTOR how can you say that about New History. Don’t you believe that self esteem is more important than fact. Luckily Hollywood, the stronghold of conservatives show only facts in their controversial films. Add politician like Al Gore and the silver screen is a fountain of truth.

Is Carmen her middle name or surname? And if it’s her surname as I suspect, why does her family call her by both names?

AKJeff “Tia Carmen” means “Aunt Carmen”, so Carmen would be her first name.
