Maybe the one in panel two had been knocked into the mud by some bullies, but now he is happy to be home where people love him. And maybe the one in panel one had a great time playing in the park chasing squirrels without any mud.
Given the expression on each dog’s face, I’d say it’s all the same. Happy dog is happy dog.

Obvious. It’s the same dog. a) Anticipating his day outside , and b) After his day outside.
