If i told my mother to shut up, I would have to deal with my mother who could slap you into next week, my seven brothers and seven sisters, plus my father who was a steel worker all his life
not being able to sit down for 2 weeks comes to mind…..OK,,,, 3 days.. and DID………….still remember it from 50 years ago.a broken leg did NOT hurt that bad.
Interesting. Lotsa commentators here supporting physical violence as a means of discipline. Would you accept your boss or a co-worker slapping you as a disciplinary measure? No? Then why would it be alright for a parent?
You have to start from the beginning and letting kids know what is good or bad behavior. Doesn’t mean you let bad stuff slide, but simply hitting someone doesn’t correct the problem. What that does is make someone afraid of you.
And I have three kids, always honor roll, part-time jobs and polite thru high school who we got thru college with no loans and are now working good jobs with wonderful spouses who come visit us on their own. (And yes, I count my blessings every day.)
If a child is spanked the right way (without anger, and only a few swats, after having a talk with mom or dad about what they did wrong) they shouldn’t need any more spankings past the age of 8 or so. But slapping the face is always wrong. This time it was done in anger, I’m glad both of them realize they simply went too far. Now there should be apologies on both sides. Unfortunately Jeri will remain a spoiled brat.
It also has to do with respect. My dad never waivered on the standard he expected us kids to follow. As I got older he did not even have to raise his voice. Just a word did the trick for all three of us. I loved him dearly and miss him now that he is gone.

If I had told my mom to shut up, I’d be lucky to be alive today.

Seems maybe both methods work,so no need to put down either one.

In panel 3, Jeri and her Mom are both shocked at what happened. In panel 4 there are tears of regret on both sides.
