Media headlined it as “cost to raise a child.” But the USDA reports reported average spending on a child, not the cost to raise. The figure is much higher than the actual basic cost to raise. It is the result of a survey, and so it is reporting both over-spending by parents and over-reporting of expenditures. You will not have $233,000 cash in the bank after 18 years, simply because you did not have a child.
Most who do go to college come away with debts starting around $28,000. Also no job waiting when they get out. That left for cheaper pastures decades ago.
