I go up non-running escalators all the time. It’s almost like stairclimbing. What a workout I get.

Other places besides the mall use them. However all the ones I’ve been to have elevators. Then you do need to use stairs if it’s not running.

Ralph probably has knee trouble and can’t use the stairs.

Just wait until he gets to the part where he pays the fee.

Escalators never break. They just need to be reversed because the basement is full or has run out of stairs.

C’mon Ralph, you need the exercise!

I blame Murphy’s law!

Sometimes the escalators are shut down because they are working on them. If the entire escalator is open it is very dangerous to be near and unusable as stairs as there are no steps. And once you see one open you really never trust them to ride on again.
