Eddie, listen to the lady tell us how gold panning works. Why? Because they're about to hand you a plate full of muddy water and gravel. I need you to have a clear idea about what happens after that.
From the look on his face, I believe Eddie DOES, in fact, have a clear idea what happens after that. His idea may not be the same as Sara’s idea, but regardless ……….
We just did the big bus tour (12 to 14 hours) of Denali National Park. According to the tour guide/bus driver, there’ve been many years of efforts to change the name of the mountain back to Denali, but it was mostly blocked by congresspeople from Ohio, where McKinley is from. Of course, you don’t have to believe that guy- he’s only lived in the middle of the situation for 17 years. If you believe that Obama suddenly decided this for everyone, you can. Oh, the other thing the tour guide said was that it’d probably still be years before they changed it back to Denali, if ever. So he was wrong about that.
The Alaskan legislature voted years ago that for state purposes, the name of the mountain was “Denali,” which is a name sacred to the indigenous people in Alaska. They’ve been petioning the Federal Government to change it baack officially ever since they first became a state.
Basically, people of Ohio — it’s as if I came into your state (I live in Pennsylvania) and decided that the name of your capital city was inappropriate since it’s been decided that the person in question didn’t “discover America” and furthermore abused native tribes in the Carribean and that you should change it. A random prospector really should not have the authority to rename major geographic features. Rename Columbus “McKinley” if you are that upset.

I think it’s just “Denali”. They retired the “Mount” when they deep-sixed the “McKinley”.

When we panned they basically gave us the pan a bucket and a shovel and said go for it.

Ironically, Mckinley never visited the mountain that was named after him. If I remember correctly he never visited Alaska either.
