Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for June 20, 2010
Transcript:
Mike: Wow... extra fees for everything! You'd think panels would be in the basic package! Hi, folks... as you may have just noticed, today this newspaper is switching over to basic Doonesbury! Because of rising costs, it's just not possible to offer all the great features you've come to expect from this strip. Fortunately, all is not lost! If you call right now, you can upgrade to premium Doonesbury, which gives you access to special add-ons, like full color... Zonker: Wow! Look at that! Mike: ... and eye-popping background art, like this stunning sunset in Washington's cascades! Zonker: Wow... Mike: And for a few pennies more, you can sign up for a Doonesbury platinum, giving you full access to our top supporting cast members... and, of course, our hilarious trademark punchlines! Zonker: I mean, who do you think I am - Octomom? Mike: Call now and we'll throw in extra subtext - free!

First we were in Kansas, and then we wound up in Oz. And you were there, and you, and you.

The sun is setting in the Casades, so they might be in Oz…or possibly Ellensburg.

I’ve long thought that Trudeau needed another visit to Lady Grey’s country. He’s made this directional mistake before.

I live in Missouri (or Missoura, if you prefer), and I really miss the North Cascades…. 10 years living in the foothills really spoiled me.

HM, I have no idea whether you’re a sincere monomaniac, or as some have suggested, an agent provocateur. Either way, you’re contributing nothing but an annoying distraction, and I’ve flagged you. Describe what you mean in specific detail and cite credible sources, or else drop it and move on.
denneyford over 14 years ago
NB: sun sets in the Olympics, actually rises in Cascades; unless, of course you are in Ellensburg or Cle Ellem.

SCAATY_423,
You tend to accuse others of what you do. Hence, you have been flagged!
heffay over 14 years ago
Uhh, wouldn’t ” a stunning sunset in Washington’s Cascades” put them about 150 miles EAST of Seattle, over in central Washington?

Your prerogative, sir. But might I ask you to be more specific? To my (admittedly failing) recollection, I’ve never posted a bumper-sticker one-liner, or been deliberately and personally rude to anyone. It’s true that I can be pompous and pedantic, but that’s just been me since the Eisenhower administration, and I doubt I can change now….
alviebird over 14 years ago
Pedantic is a problem here?
I’m in trouble.
Maybe I missed something. Was horace_manoor refering simply to color vs non-color, or to something I’m not privy to?
Someone fill me in, please?
Either way, maybe flagging isn’t the answer for either side. Why try to stifle debate by suppressing the opinions of others? (As long as it is debate and not venomous argument).

Horace is just “spamming” for attention. Better to ignore the ignoramus than to get flagged for excessive flagging.
cdhaley over 14 years ago
Let’s see if Horce Manure replies, the way his flagger (SCAATY) did. If HM doesn’t, I’ll flag him too as a phony–like Nobets, another “contributor” who tries to provoke a response but never engages her/himself.
Ps. We’re not aiming to suppress dissonant opinions, Bird. We’re trying to keep our discussions entertainingly serious a la GT by asking participants to own up to their opinions. Why offer an opinion that you don’t consider worth supporting?
“Doonesbury” is unique because GT always couches his political satire in the form of an opinion or point of view that is arguable. Readers are free either to join the argument or limit themselves to factual comment–the wittier the better, like Sheik’s comment above, for instance, or FriscoLou’s, below.

Ah, the flagcott/counterflagcott wars. Isn’t that the way WW I started?

@ palin drome,
I agree. I just don’t know what brought all this about. I was simply warning against flagging to suppress opposing viewpoints unless the poster was just stirring things up as opposed to real debate (which is also your view). I love debate. I detest ‘argument’ for the sake of attacking on a personal level.
The idea is to present one point without being vitriolic or personal. And, if possible, with humor. To do otherwise is to show one’s immaturity and lack of wisdom.

I don’t agree with stebons’ last comment but I don’t think it is particularly off-topic.
This cartoon can be seen as a comment on the websites of News Corp’s papers putting their content behind a pay-wall (although for some reason I thought it was a repeat, myself). I never thought I would agree with Murdoch, but I think this is a good decision, in theory anyway. How it works in the long run is another matter.
One of the many reasons the Newspaper business appears to be failing is the painfully stupid decision to put all the content you have to pay for in the newspaper up for free on the Web. That they were surprised when circulations fell says much for the lack of leadership, business skills and common sense. That most newspapers groups have reacted by drastically cutting staff instead of stopping giving stuff away for free says even more.
Whatever you think of Murdoch and his son, no-one can deny that they are shrewd businessmen.
EDIT; Yes, I recognise the irony of making this comment on a website that makes traditional newspaper content available for free.

It would be appropriate to move Doonesbury and his family to Yakima if you want that sunset. Last time I looked, sunset over the casades eminates from the West.
andrew_c over 14 years ago
Well, I’ve now read a few more of their comments and it may have been purely by accident that they were on topic.
Edit: Anyway back to topic (kind of). What to you people think of the News Corp pay wall? Is is shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted?
I do think that whatever the other media corporations are saying about it, if it succeeds they will be putting up pay walls as fast as they can.

Cascade Sunset? How about: Lake Chelan Washington
I haven’t traveled there to see how the sun looks while setting - bet it has great fishing!
