When kids are that age, you can’t praise and encourage them enough. They will learn about competition as they age, but at 7yrs old, you just need someone to be happy for you and with you.
Although I was a professional soccer referee for many years, one of my greatest joys was the 18 years I also spent refereeing, training and supervising referees for AYSO – for free ! Everyone was a volunteer and we were there for the kids. The emphasis was on playing, learning and HAVING FUN. Every kid got to play at least a full half of the game and the emphasis was of positive coaching and parenting. No Little League mentality fans allowed. I have refereed other youth leagues but none as much fun as AYSO.
giving trophies to everyone just for being one of the team, does not help the child. Granted I grew up 60 years ago. But I can remember playing sand lot baseball with no adults around, we had fun, it was not organized, but we kept score and picked teams and the worst players were not picked. I was one of those not picked, along with a few of my friends, We all grew up to be very good in our chosen fields. When kids are growing up without adults watching over them every minute IMPO they grow up to be far better adults than they do when adults supervise and organize their every minute of free time.

Anyone who thinks those “Participation Trophies” are for the KIDS has never seen how the Parents behave..
