How did he get to the far wall in the first place ? He would have had to scale down the opposite wall and cross over the beast there, where it would have eaten him.

Still, what if the brick wall you’ve overcome with such an exhaustive effort holds a prize that’s too much for you to handle or keep? To paraphrase Sydney J. Harris: Winners know when the price of winning is too high, losers strive to win what they can ill afford to handle or keep.
