I remember when I was a teenager. I thought it was so cool to look older than I really was so I could be the big man that was able to buy the beer. Now….I still look older than I really am, but it’s not such a great thing any more. ( Though I have been given the “senior’s discount” a couple of times at restaurants….)
I was taught from an early age to say “sir” and “ma’am” to my elders (and betters). I still remember the first time someone called me “sir”… made me feel good and bad at the same time.
Another point: it’s been my experience that few servers will voluntarily offer the senior discount because that lowers the bottom line from which their tip is calculated.
Last time I got carded was at 32, but I think the waitress was trolling for a bigger tip.
Last time I was seriously carded was at 27. I had left my ID in the car (thinking there was no need, after all I WAS 27) and had to go out and get it.
Now I’m eligible for most senior discounts, and I have to prove THAT!
Last time I got asked for I.D, I was 40. I was in a nice restaurant with my husband. I ordered a glass of wine with dinner and the waiter asked me for I.D. The first words out of my mouth were “you gotta be kidding?????….. ” He said they ask anyone who looks under 35…. Later found out that they were being watched because of violations, so they were asking a lot of people…. (but he didn’t ask hubby who was 45 at the time)
i grew a mustache in my early 20’s to look older. kept it until it became completely white in my 40’s. it then occurred to me that it had outlived its purpose. i still grow one occasionally, but generally only for a month or so at a time.
