I think that would make it kind of hard to catch the ball.

A left-handed pitcher is called a southpaw because the preferred orientation of a baseball diamond is such that the line from pitcher’s mound to home plate is oriented from northeast to southwest; making the pitcher’s arm face south.

Back in the day when baseball was played during the early afternoon, the orientation meant that each outfielder was equally hindered by the sun. Now that games start in the early evening, the right fielder is at a particular disadvantage.

I remember several years ago watching a news video of a one armed pitcher. When pitching he’d hold his glove in his armpit (I think his arm ended at his elbow. He’d pitch the ball and place his hand in his glove in the same motion and be ready to catch the ball if it was hit to him, or when the catcher tossed it back, then he’d do it all over again, pitch after pitch. It looked so natural it made the other players look unnatural with keeping their glove on all the time.

Sounds like the ballpark is in a Colorado city, where the altitude is high, and therefore it’s colder up there.
