I’ve lived in my place over ten years, and still hit the wrong switch about 1/3 of the time. If I used the disposal more than once a month maybe I wouldn’t have a problem remembering.
I do that also. But instead of turning the light off, I turn the light above the sink on. Or if I want the light on, I hit the disposal and it makes a terrible grinding noise with no water running. 25 years living in the house! Crazy huh?
My husband tells me “I’m Earl this morning”. He turns on the disposal instead of the light early in the morning and I nearly hit the ceiling every time. But, I’m not 100% with those switches myself.
I have two switches on the wall, just to the right of the sink. the one on the left is for the light above the sink and the one on the right is for the disposal. I very rarely get them mixed up. :)
So this one house had the garbage disposal switch on the wall next to the knob side of the back (kitchen door). The light switch was on the hinge side.
I’ve Identified the Disposal switch with a Visual Cue! It may not meet the Aesthetics of Good Housekeeping or such, but like Earl, I don’t really care!
Like Rustfarmer, we compost, so I don’t need to worry about the disposal, but we have lived in this house 41 years, and I still walk into walls and furniture in the dark. Nothing has been rearranged since we moved in, so I figure in another couple of years I’ll be able to find my way around.
Personally, I find the idea of the disposal switch being anywhere near another switch to be both stupid and disturbing. In my house, the light switch is on a completely different wall, and the disposal switch is all by itself.
I remember the old Ole Olsen comedy line; (if you’re under 60 years old, this will be new to you, btw) “Yah, ve yust put us a new garbage disposal under da sink…da ol’ pig died!”(Un-PC, I know, but whatcha gonna remember growing up in a Swedish farmers’ neighborhood? Our Grange membership list looked like page three of the Sundsvall phone book !)
i have friends whose place flooded twice. the complex permitted them to move to a place across the way where everything! was reversed. the room arrangement light switches the dials on the stove. it was all discombobulating for quite a while
I have no problem with the disposal by the sink..It’s the microwave, coffee pot, and toaster oven on the same 15 amp circuit that I have to be careful(shades of Lisa Douglas in Green Acres)
I’ve always been afraid of garbage disposals because of the temptation to stick my hand in and turn on the switch. It’s a strange neurosis similar to standing too close to the edge of an abyss and being afraid you might jump off.
The switch to my garbage disposal is to the right of the sink, with two wall outlets. The switch for the light above the sink is on its left, with two wall outlets there, too. One always keeps the microwave oven clock on. The coffeemaker’s wall outlet is on another wall altogether.

The kitchen of every house I’ve lived in has a set of those switches by the sink. I still get them wrong.

If you were to compost, you would have no use for a stupid disposal. Problem solved.

After a few months of always hitting the wrong one, I labeled the switches by my kitchen sink.

In an effort to use less water, I’ve stopped using the disposal, instead scraping into the garbage. (every little bit helps)

I painted my disposal switch with nail polish (after 30 years of hitting the wrong one).

I don’t have a switch on my garbage disposal, it’s the compost pile in my backyard, never clogs up and doesn’t make any noise either. Problem solved.
