Frank Sinatra: These little town blues... Nancy Reagan: Ouch! Ronald Reagan: Well, maybe that's enough dancing for tonight, mommy Nancy Reagan: Oh, Ronnie, it's still so exciting to listen to Francis' records. I'm so glad he's finally gotten the respect he deserves. First the medal, then the doctorate. And he looked as humbled by it all as a five-year-old boy! Frank Sinatra: That's Dr. Sinatra, you little bimbo! Dealer: Yes, sir, Dr. Sinatra. Would you like another card?

Dr. Sinatra will make up for his coarse behavior by giving the bimbo a big tip.

I don’t remember any of these, and I have to admit that I don’t get the point. Aren’t MOSt big self-important Hollywood stars a bunch of egomaniacs? I mean, what’s new about that?

Only that Sinatra was portrayed as clean and wholesome while having some seriously criminal friends.

But at least he wasn’t a communist. Ronnie never had to turn him in as a communist.

I wonder if Trudeau was pointing up the adoration of gangsters by a Reagan friend to highlight how much GOP administrations resemble a Mafia-type “bustout” operation, in which a business is bought out (perhaps forcibly) and then milked vigorously: orders are placed for as much as they can get, banking on the credibility earned by the previous owners. Everything (including new orders) is sold as fast as possible at fire-sale prices. They may even burn it for the insurance, or just run it into the ground and leave somebody else holding the bag.
It’s the GOP’s model for governance, and has been since the 80s, and they like the company of like-minded businessmen who pioneered the procedure.

A little humility goes a long way. Some times it goes off and leaves us.

Is it Bash Frankie week or something?

It is surprising how many straw man arguments appear on this thread. Sometimes one doesn’t know whether to respond or ignore these.

While funny, I wonder what caused Trudeau to pick this week’s strips to re-post from 1985? This retrospective has been more character arcs then political arcs. Just wondering.

Sinatra had a contract with Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra wanted out and Dorsey refused. Willie Moretti of the Genovese crime family paid Dorsey a visit and “convinced” Dorsey to let Sinatra go. Sinatra denied this but Dorsey stood by his story.
