At the age where a lot of people they know are passing away, my older sister & her husband attend funerals quite frequently, & we joke that she will soon be given a reserved parking spot.
I keep a funeral outfit (one each for winter and summer) on the closet door. l represent the family and make sure that those who were close friends are remembered even if my family members are no longer here to remember them. It is a shame that we learn so many wonderful things about our friends once they are gone.
Times have changed and in many places there is no longer the close knit community of family, friends and acquaintances , to mourn the deceased ( or celebrate their life ). Attrition of course has taken its toll on an older generation who were regulars at wakes and funerals. Younger people and retirees have moved from their hometowns for better jobs or better weather. The cost and rigors of travel has made it prohibitive for many.
Gone are the days of the real “Irish wakes” of my grandparents’ day or the 2 and 3 night wakes of my parents generation. When my kid brother passed a couple of years ago, the wake was a only afternoon and one night affair -which apparently has become customary where he lived.
My mother used to refer to the obituary columns in the newspaper as the " Irish sports pages" because that’s the first thing that was read by the neighbors. I just read the obits to make sure I’m not in them !

Just be thankful you are visiting Mort’s by walking through the front door rather than on a gurney through the back door…
