And then a slice of Krispy “apple” pie for dessert…
Sorta like the Ritz cracker version, when you can’t afford Ritz crackers.
Made with crumbled packets of saltines, packets of sugar, and mini cups of liquid coffee creamer (if you luck out, you might even find real half and half! But sometimes you have to make do with powder in a packet.)
Hopefully, you have some cinnamon and some margarine or butter…. or you can get the latter at a fast food place that serves breakfast pancakes.
When dumpster diving, you can do a heck of a lot better than packets of condiments – a lot of perfectly good food gets thrown out. In some cities, soup kitchens work with groceries and restaurants to rescue aesthetically flawed but otherwise perfectly edible foodstuffs. Yet even in those cities, a lot of stores and restaurants will not participate, and the Agneses of the world could eat well by seeking out their discards.
Management has NEVER done what is right! Their idea is, “If we can’t use it, then no one uses it!” AND it starts at the top! When I worked for the PO, they upgraded to new computer system and instead of selling the old ones, they just threw them in the land fill AND guarded the dumpsters to make sure no one got any of them!
There were times when I was in college when I was so broke I had to steal packets of catsup from the student union to make tomato soup with. I don’t recall if there were crackers or not.
During the Depression, citrus growers in California would toss their unsold fruit into the ocean. When they discovered people were swimming out and getting it, they began to soak the fruit in kerosene to make it inedible.
FDR stepped in and ordered the government to purchase the fruit. Eventually, this led to the Excess Commodities Program – the forerunner to Food Stamps
Anything thrown away is considered abandoned and worthless to the original owner, ownership renounced. You can not steal what nobody owns..By the way I saw a cathode ray tube television beside the road, WORKS written in front of it. My only thought was that I would only consider taking it for the copper wire for my wife’s jewelry making. If a thing works but you don’t want it, it’s worthless.

It’s free Trout, it’s not stealing when it’s free, however taking advantage, yes that’s another thing.

Has anyone ever made a casserole using only those ingredients? If so, how was it?

…and then there’s the people who fill their pockets with the packets so they can sell them on eBay…

If they find a place that serves biscuits or pancakes they could make a nice desert with the jelly and syrup packets.
